Cisco, EMC, VMware in Cloud Venture
Where EMC's Atmos cloud widgetry may or may not fit in the grand scheme of things is unclear

Cloud Expo on Ulitzer

Sometime before 4:30 Wednesday afternoon New York time Cisco and EMC, two companies that are already tight and were expected to get tighter, are supposed to announce a joint venture to sell a cloud or cloud products called vBlock.

VMware's involved because virtualization is relatively standard cloud fare, it's majority owned by EMC and it's already Cisco's BFF but its level of participation in the venture is unclear despite all the whispering going on. It could be a full member.

Based on broad hints from the companies, the Wall Street Journal got wind of the joint venture in September and said it was code named Alpine.

Now published reports out of Dow Jones and Reuters are saying that the infrastructure-as-a-service venture will have its own CEO - as all good little joint ventures do - and peddle both hosted services and private clouds created out of Cisco's Unified Computing Systems (UCS) and networking, EMC's storage and VMware's virtualization to large accounts.

According to what one unnamed source told Reuters, "You can buy it from them as a service then eventually transition it to your own data center."

The venture will reportedly also provide maintenance and support.

It is supposed to advance Cisco's fortunes in the data center against IBM and HP, both of which are ticked off at Cisco's temerity in daring to try to break into servers - and neither is likely to be any happier with this alliance. Their only consolation may be that Cisco's boxes don't appear to have gotten a ringing endorsement from users - at least not yet.

Where EMC's Atmos cloud widgetry may or may not fit in the grand scheme of things is unclear.
