Adobe put out this press release - well, kinda, it was released at 6am Saturday morning and the company didn't bother to tell its staff about it, least of all its sales people. Anyway, it's about how Acrobat.com, Adobe's contribution to the flock of Office-challenging web apps, has hit its first upgrade, adding a bunch of reportedly user-requested features - like a prettier interface - as well as smartphone integration. Since Acrobat.com is based on Flash, guess that's a way to get a hint of Flash on the forbidden iPhone. Maybe Adobe hopes Steve Jobs won't notice.

Installing Geneva Beta 2 on Windows 7

Recently I installed the Beta 2 version of "Geneva", or ADFS 2.0. All of my machines are now Windows 7 machines, including just about all of my VHDs and virtual machines. The only time I use Win2k8 R2 is when the product I'm installing specifically requires me to do that. So when I installed Geneva on my Win7 box, I thought everything would be fine. Then I rebooted. The "Modify STS Reference..." and "Update federation metadata" menu items that are supposed to be added to the list of available options on an ASP.NET web application were gone. They were there before I rebooted but they were gone after. I also noticed something funny with the Identity training kit install. Every single directory and file in there was marked as "read only". I would unset the read-only flag, right click the file, get properties, and sure enough, it was still set to read only. WTF?

The world’s most powerful supercomputer is Jaguar, the recently upgraded Cray XT5 rig at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, according to the new semi-annual Top500 list. Jaguar’s roughly 250,000 processors went from quad-core Opterons to six-core Istanbul Opterons and now delivers 2.3 petaflops of theoretical peak performance or 1.75 petaflops on the Linpack benchmark, dethroning IBM. Four of the top five machines are now AMD-based. This and Intel’s money too. My, my. It’s Cray’s first time in the top spot. HP’s got 210 of Top500 machines; IBM’s got 186. China’s got number five.

Adobe Cans Another 9% of its Workforce

Adobe is cutting another 680 full-time jobs worldwide, around 9% of its pre-Omniture workforce, to align its costs with its fiscal 2010 operating plan and “the realities of the business environment,” according to an SEC filing. It previously said it would cut 9% of Omniture’s 1,200 people when that deal closed last month. The company cut 600 people last December. Adobe expects the latest move to cost it a $65 million-$71million restructuring charge, including around $17 million-$19 million related to the consolidating leased facilities. It says it will incur additional restructuring expenses relating to Omniture’s operations as part of the total acquisition price.

Sometime before 4:30 Wednesday afternoon New York time Cisco and EMC, two companies that are already tight and were expected to get tighter, are supposed to announce a joint venture to sell a cloud or cloud products called vBlock. VMware's involved because virtualization is relatively standard cloud fare, it's majority owned by EMC and it's already Cisco's BFF but its level of participation in the venture is unclear despite all the whispering going on. It could be a full member. Based on broad hints from the companies, the Wall Street Journal got wind of the joint venture in September and said it was code named Alpine.

A New Jersey outfit called Textscape LLC sued Adobe in a California federal court last Friday claiming that Adobe's Acrobat Reader, which must be on every computer in the universe, treads on its patent for processing text. It's asking for unspecified damages. The widgetry involved lets users "obtain information in a body of text without reading the text." Apparently it creates a map box with a representation of the whole text when the text is too big for the screen.

RIAbiz.com recently discussed the findings of an August 24-25, 2009 Investment News survey conducted on the Twitter habits of the financial-advisory community. Not surprisingly the survey reveals that "a mere 14.9% of financial advisers say they communicate with clients or colleagues through Twitter. Meanwhile, only 44.9% and 43.8% of advisers say they use LinkedIn and Facebook, respectively, the survey found".
