Adobe Fiddles with its Web Apps

Adobe put out this press release - well, kinda, it was released at 6am Saturday morning and the company didn't bother to tell its staff about it, least of all its sales people. Anyway, it's about how Acrobat.com, Adobe's contribution to the flock of Office-challenging web apps, has hit its first upgrade, adding a bunch of reportedly user-requested features - like a prettier interface - as well as smartphone integration. Since Acrobat.com is based on Flash, guess that's a way to get a hint of Flash on the forbidden iPhone. Maybe Adobe hopes Steve Jobs won't notice.

Installing Geneva Beta 2 on Windows 7

Recently I installed the Beta 2 version of "Geneva", or ADFS 2.0. All of my machines are now Windows 7 machines, including just about all of my VHDs and virtual machines. The only time I use Win2k8 R2 is when the product I'm installing specifically requires me to do that. So when I installed Geneva on my Win7 box, I thought everything would be fine. Then I rebooted. The "Modify STS Reference..." and "Update federation metadata" menu items that are supposed to be added to the list of available options on an ASP.NET web application were gone. They were there before I rebooted but they were gone after. I also noticed something funny with the Identity training kit install. Every single directory and file in there was marked as "read only". I would unset the read-only flag, right click the file, get properties, and sure enough, it was still set to read only. WTF?

5th International Cloud Expo will take place April 19-21, 2010, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City with more than 5,000 delegates and over 100 sponsors and exhibitors participating in the conference.

Cloud Expo is the world's leading Cloud-focused event and is held five times a year, in New York, Silicon Valley, Europe, Japan, and Brazil.

Over 200 corporate sponsors and 10,000 industry professionals became part of Cloud Expo since its inception, more than all other Cloud-related events put together worldwide.

AMD Tops Top500

The world’s most powerful supercomputer is Jaguar, the recently upgraded Cray XT5 rig at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, according to the new semi-annual Top500 list. Jaguar’s roughly 250,000 processors went from quad-core Opterons to six-core Istanbul Opterons and now delivers 2.3 petaflops of theoretical peak performance or 1.75 petaflops on the Linpack benchmark, dethroning IBM. Four of the top five machines are now AMD-based. This and Intel’s money too. My, my. It’s Cray’s first time in the top spot. HP’s got 210 of Top500 machines; IBM’s got 186. China’s got number five.

Instant Professionalism Online Despite Yourself...with Ulitzer

I read an article by an author on Ulitzer.com and was amazed at the professional image it provided him. I immediately researched Ulitzer to see if there was yet hope for me. I am a technology blogger on the subject of mobile computing strategies. As I was doing research I came across the author Ian Thain, a fellow mobile computing blogger, who had a very professional website on Ulitzer (www.ulitzer.com). Professional envy motivated me to investigate this thing called Ulitzer. Ian's website looked like he had spent a great deal of time and money on it - all things I am short on.

Adobe Cans Another 9% of its Workforce

Adobe is cutting another 680 full-time jobs worldwide, around 9% of its pre-Omniture workforce, to align its costs with its fiscal 2010 operating plan and “the realities of the business environment,” according to an SEC filing. It previously said it would cut 9% of Omniture’s 1,200 people when that deal closed last month. The company cut 600 people last December. Adobe expects the latest move to cost it a $65 million-$71million restructuring charge, including around $17 million-$19 million related to the consolidating leased facilities. It says it will incur additional restructuring expenses relating to Omniture’s operations as part of the total acquisition price.

Special Report on the Emerging Cloud Computing Trend

McWilliams has displayed uncanny accuracy in predicting the ebb and flow of the markets this year. He not only nailed the March bottom to the day, but also predicted the exact catalysts that would start what has been one of the most significant recovery rallies in NASDAQ history. Following his March prediction, McWilliams advised readers to buy the early July dip and predicted that Intel would blow away even the highest estimate of the 36 analysts covering the stock and, in doing so, ignite a huge July rally. Again, McWilliams was right on; so much so that one Next Inning reader wondered if he wrote the script for the Intel Q2 conference call. Q3 was a repeat performance and has further fueled McWilliams' nearly 200% overall return, 11 times higher than the S&P 500.

Cisco, EMC, VMware in Cloud Venture

Sometime before 4:30 Wednesday afternoon New York time Cisco and EMC, two companies that are already tight and were expected to get tighter, are supposed to announce a joint venture to sell a cloud or cloud products called vBlock. VMware's involved because virtualization is relatively standard cloud fare, it's majority owned by EMC and it's already Cisco's BFF but its level of participation in the venture is unclear despite all the whispering going on. It could be a full member. Based on broad hints from the companies, the Wall Street Journal got wind of the joint venture in September and said it was code named Alpine.

Cloud Computing on Gartner's Top 10 List and SYS-CON Events' 2010 Calendar

Gartner defines a strategic technology as one with the potential for significant impact on the enterprise in the next three years. Factors that denote significant impact include a high potential for disruption to IT or the business, the need for a major dollar investment, or the risk of being late to adopt. These technologies impact the organization's long-term plans, programs and initiatives. They may be strategic because they have matured to broad market use or because they enable strategic advantage from early adoption. “Companies should factor the top 10 technologies into their strategic planning process by asking key questions and making deliberate decisions about them during the next two years,” said David Cearley, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “However, this does not necessarily mean adoption and investment in all of the technologies. They should determine which technologies will help and transform their individual business initiatives.”

About 3 weeks ago, I wrote this article about the Kindle, and mentioned how I thought that for various reasons attached to the Kindle, I was actually going to be reading more. Shortly thereafter, I got a ping on Facebook from someone I didn’t know. His name is Brad Stone, and he identified himself as a journalist and he had some questions about my blog post. I rang him up, and we spoke for a while. In today’s NY Times is the article he was writing.

Adobe Reader Sued

A New Jersey outfit called Textscape LLC sued Adobe in a California federal court last Friday claiming that Adobe's Acrobat Reader, which must be on every computer in the universe, treads on its patent for processing text. It's asking for unspecified damages. The widgetry involved lets users "obtain information in a body of text without reading the text." Apparently it creates a map box with a representation of the whole text when the text is too big for the screen.

And Then Came the Browser-in-a-Browser

Google, whose Chrome can claim all of 2.8% of the browser market, has come up with an open source plug-in that runs Chrome inside Microsoft's still dominant Internet Explorer. How's that for brass. It calls the thing Chrome Frame and says it works with IE6, 7 and 8 on Vista and XP SP2, but it's really supposedly targeted at the eight-year-old IE6 mandated by many companies.
